Pi(π) Day in Downtown Salisbury – 3.14
March 14, 2019
Salisbury, MD: Pi (π) Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world, and on Thursday, March 14, 2019 Downtown Salisbury will honor the mathematical constant with baked desserts, poetry readings, contests and prizes.
Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter – and it’s a constant, meaning for all circles no matter what the size, Pi will be the same – plus its digits go on forever, without repeating, to infinity! Pi (π) Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts, memorization buffs and fans of roundness to recite as many digits as they can, talk about math, and to eat pie. The day also coincides with Albert Einstein’s birthday – adding another layer of fun to the mathematical day.
Downtown Salisbury is ready to celebrate the with special contests. The fun starts at Maya Bella’s Pizzeria with a pizza-pie eating contest at 1 p.m. with ten lucky contestants going head to head with Mayor Jake Day, and Deputy City Administrator Andy Kitzrow, in a race to finish a 16-inch pie! The winner will receive a gift certificate to The Ugly Pie, and Downtown merch! Spectators are welcome, plus Maya Bella’s will have $8 large 16-inch, and $10 extra-large 18-inch pizza pies on special all day long!
Then from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., memorization buffs are invited to stop by Roadie Joe’s Bar & Grill to show off their skills for a chance to spin the Pi Prize Wheel! Any participants who can recite ten or more digits of pi are invited to show off their memorization skills for a chance to win pi-related prizes. Then from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. SBY Coffee Shop will host Pi-Ku Poetry night, hosted by Babs McGrory of Vowel Mouth Poetry. A spin-off from Haiku’s 5-7-5 pattern, Pi-Ku follows a 3-1-4 pattern, or if the poet prefers, they can follow the digit sequence of pi out to infinity. Participants are invited to listen to Pi-Kus or share their own creations. A zine of Pi-Ku poetry will also be for sale with 50% of profits benefiting the MD Food Bank.
All day long, The Ugly Pie will have $3.14 off all full-size pies, and buy-one-get-one slices while supplies last. For a savory twist Olde Towne Deli Café and Coffeehouse will have Shepherd’s Pie on lunch special. Roadie Joe’s is celebrating with Kids Eat Free from 5-8 p.m, plus live music with Josh Pryor and a kindness rock painting station for the kids. Grown-ups can enjoy apple pie shots on special at The Brick Room – and try out other pie-themed libations.
